Korean tourist dies during snorkelling session, cause of death undetermined

KOTA KINABALU: A Korean tourist died under mysterious circumstances during a snorkelling excursion in the popular Padang Point waters of Pulau Gaya this morning.

The woman, identified as Jung Myun Gok, 68, was part of a snorkelling party which had taken to the water at about 11am.

About 30 minutes later, a friend spotted the victim floating lifelessly in the water, with her lifejacket on and snorkel still attached.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner M. Chandra said the victim’s friend sought help from a lifeguard, who immediately brought the victim out of the water.

“The lifeguard performed CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), but the victim remained unconscious.

“The victim was then rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead,” he said, adding that no injuries were found on the victim’s body.

Less than two weeks ago, a 52 year-old female Korean tourist drowned in the swimming pool of a resort here.
