GOH V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong capped a brilliant season by clinching the World Superseries Final crown in Dubai on Sunday.
The men's doubles World No 1, lived up to their billing, as they took only 40 minutes to see off Japan’s Takeshi Kamura-Keigo Sonoda 21-14, 21-19 at the Hamdan Sports Complex.
The Rio Olympic Games silver medallists, also silenced their critics after failing to do well at the China and Hong Kong Opens last month.
“I have to thank the crowd here for their support and also to all the Malaysian fans for believing in us,” said a delighted V Shem right after the match.
“This year has been an amazing one for V Shem and I. We have achieved a lot.
“The Japanese duo was not easy as they were also in good form. They could have caught us with their fast paced game.
“Lucky for us, we managed to slow them down and won the match,” added Wee Kiong.
The Malaysian pair pocketed US$84,000 (approx. RM376,000) in prize money while the Japanese duo settled for US$40,000 (approx. RM180,000).
The Malaysian shuttlers will begin their season next year with the Malaysia Masters GP Gold in Sibu which will run from Jan 17-22.
