PORT KLANG: A Honda Civic owner who left his car parked on railway tracks here paid a hefty price for his negligence when it was hit by a locomotive on Monday morning.
The irresponsible 56-year-old man was not only left with a damaged car, he also faces a fine of between RM1,000 and RM5,000, as he is now under police investigation under Section 48 of the Road Transport Act.
Klang Selatan district police chief Assistant Commissioner Alzafny Ahmad said initial investigation revealed that the driver parked his car on the railway tracks at Jalan Pelabuhan Selatan at about 10am to catch a ferry to Pulau Ketam.
It is learnt that the man and his friend went to the island to celebrate the Chinese New Year with friends who live there.
"Several Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) operations personnel who saw the car blocking the railway tried to locate its driver, to no avail.
"When all attempts to contact the owner failed, KTMB Auxiliary Police personnel, with the assistance of members of the public, attempted to move the vehicle at about noon, as a locomotive was scheduled to pass the stretch at 1pm," Alzafny said.
It is learnt that the crowd was unable to move the Civic much, as there were other cars parked close to it.
When the locomotive arrived at 1pm, it grazed and damaged the Civic's rear.
The locomotive driver then lodged a police report on the incident.
Alzafny said the Civic driver only learnt about the incident when he returned from Pulau Ketam at about 4pm.
He said the area where the car was parked is not a parking zone, and is closed to vehicles when a train passes the stretch of track.
A video clip of the incident and several pictures, taken by a witness yesterday, have gone viral on Facebook.
The footage, about 127 seconds in duration, shows the locomotive driver trying to pass the location as slowly as possible so as not to inflict much damage to the Civic.
