11 new rotavirus infections in Kedah; Ulu Legong Hot Spring remains closed

ALOR STAR: Eleven new suspected cases of rotavirus infection have been reported in the state, bringing the total number of cases to 18 in the last few days.

Kedah health director Datuk Dr Norhizan Ismail said that the 11 new cases involve seven children aged between 1 to 12, and three youths aged between 15 and 19.

"As of 5pm on Sunday, we received reports of 11 new suspected cases of rotavirus infection in the state.

"Of the 11 new cases, three were treated as outpatients at the Jitra Hospital, while the remaining eight were admitted to various hospitals, including four to the Kulim Hospital, two to the Sik Hospital, one to the Yan Hospital and one to the Amanjaya Specialist Hospital.

"All of the patients were also found to have visited the Ulu Legong Hot Spring Recreational Centre in Baling between Jan 28 and 30," he said in a statement.

Norhizan added that four patients who were admitted to hospitals (three at Kulim Hospital and one at Jitra Hospital) between Wednesday and Friday are still in treatment.

He also said that the Ulu Legong Hot Spring Recreational Centre is still closed to allow the relevant authorities to conduct investigations on the infection.

Norhizan advised those showing symptoms such as diarrhoea, vomiting, fever and abdominal pain – and had visited the Ulu Legong Hot Spring Recreational Centre between Jan 25 and Feb 3 – to get immediate treatment at the nearest hospital.
