PM warns of "fake news" peddled by parties bent on toppling gov't

PEKAN: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has warned of peddlers of “fake news” who seek to undermine and destroy the country.

Najib said that falsehoods masquerading as “news” are an insidious attack that target the hearts and minds of Malaysians.

"Fake news, via social media, by certain political leaders have the aim of toppling the government with false information.

"This is a dangerous threat that we must battle to the finish," he said during a speech at Program Negaraku: Komuniti 1Malaysia, at Taman Tasik Sultan Abu Bakar here this afternoon.

Najib, who is also Pekan member of Parliament, warned the audience that fake news can portray good acts as bad and controversial.

As Najib ended his speech with the words "Negaraku", the audience responded with a loud "Malaysia", as well as applause and cheers.

Also present at the event was Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak and Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
