A motorist using LPT2 (East Coast Expressway Phase II) was furious when he almost crashed into a herd of cattle past midnight, recently.
Edmund Dantes said the animals had strayed onto the highway via the left road shoulder and were trying to climb over the middle-divider to get to the other side.
“Fortunately, I was alert and could swerve to avoid crashing into one of the animals which just stood in the middle of the dual-carriageway.
“The situation was further compounded by the lack of street lights on the stretch. Visibility was made worse as the animal was dark coloured.
“At least five animals were on the highway at that time,” said Dantes.
He added that had it rained heavily, he probably would have had a horrific accident as visibility would have been further reduced.
“Fearing for fellow motorists, I spotted an LPT2 Ronda patrol vehicle several kilometres away and alerted the crew to the incident.
“They thanked me and said they would take immediate action,” said Dantes.
ACTIONLINE:
Plus Berhad event, advertising, promotions and corporate responsibility deputy senior manager Mashitah Mohd Arshad said the LPT2 operator viewed the matter seriously as it concerned the safety of motorists using the highway.
“We have taken several measures to improve safety on the highway. This includes repairing the perimeter fencing stretching some 10km along the highway.
“We seek the cooperation of all concerned not to damage the fencing as it can prevent wild animals and those being bred from straying onto the highway and endangering motorists,” she said.
Frequent patrols were also undertaken to monitor the situation, added Mashitah.
The concessionaire was also repairing damaged pavements and resurfacing 10 specific locations as of last September, Mashitah said.
Plus Berhad undertook responsibility of the LPT2 fromJuly 15 last year.
