Three couples detained for close proximity at an abandoned shop in Malacca [VIDEO]

MALACCA: The State Islamic Religious Department (JAIM) detained three couples, aged 17 to 27, for alleged “close proximity” at an abandoned shophouse in Jalan Plaza Mahkota here this morning.

JAIM Enforcement Division principal assistant director Rahimin Bani said the couples were asleep when the team stormed the premises at 9.30am.

"The raid was conducted following a public tip-off. During the raid, the premises was dark, as there was no electricity or water connection.

"We had to get the police to help and went in via the back window. We believe the couples also used it to gain entry into the premises.

He said initial checks showed the premises was being used by youths as a glue-sniffing den and other immoral activities for the past two months.

Rahimin said the couples were part of a larger group of youths who had been using abandoned premises here for immoral activities.

He said those detained were mainly school dropouts and did not hold permanent employment. One of those detained has been handed over to the National Anti-Drug Agency for

further action for suspected drug abuse. - BERNAMA
