Baton relay in 10 Asean capital cities to usher 2017 SEA Games

PUTRAJAYA: The Kuala Lumpur SEA Games in 2017 will see the introduction of a baton relay to be held in the capital cities of 10 Asean countries, said the Games' organising committee chief executive officer Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong.

"For the first time in the history of SEA Games, such a relay will be held, and we will make it a legacy of the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games.

"The purpose of the run is also to create good and wide publicity for the Games and to receive support from the people not only in our country, but in other competing nations as well," he said at a press conference to announce the run here, today.

The average distance of the relay would be 10km comprising six stations, namely the starting line, four meeting points and the finishing line with a two km-gap between each station.

It will also pass through iconic locations in the capital cities involved such as the Malacanang Palace in the Philippines, the Merlion in Singapore, and the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque in Brunei Darussalam.

The SEA Games and Asean Para Games will be hosted by Malaysia in August and September 2017. - BERNAMA
