NRD nabs seven foreigners over fake documents

KUALA LUMPUR: The Putrajaya National Registry Department (NRD) nabbed seven suspects in a special operation to combat and prevent the usage of fake identification documents around Kuala Lumpur on Monday.

Its director Datuk Muhammad Razin Abdullah said the operation targeted those with false identification documents around Segambut and Bukit Kiara area.

“The operation which started around 12:30am, have managed to hold the seven suspects where six are men and one woman who all claimed to be from Sabah.

“NRD also had confiscated various types of documents such as identification cards, work permits, bank cards, vehicle deeds, and international passports from Philippines and Indonesia believed to be owned by the suspects.

“Investigations found that the six suspects are from southern Philippines and one is from Indonesia. The suspects are held over multiple offences such as carrying fake falsified identification cards and using other person’s identity cards.

“The operation had also found a syndicate ring on abusing and selling of fake identification cards by foreigners after gathering information from earlier investigations and public reports,” he said.

Muhammad added the suspects will be investigated under the NRD 1990 (Amendment 2007) for possessing and carrying other person’s identification card that could lead to imprisonment more than three years or a fine of RM20,000 or both if found guilty.

He also said that the operation is part of the initative by NRD to prevent the abuse of identification cards which the department has obtained 240 arrests in 2017.
