PUTRAJAYA: A husband and wife from the Philippines have been detained by the National Registration Department for possessing fake MyKads.
The department's Investigation and Enforcement Division director Mohammad Khairu Farhan Md Saad said the couple had been under surveillance for about two weeks before they were detained today.
"Based on our investigations, they bought the fake MyKads from a syndicate at RM250 each," he said.
He said further checks revealed the couple originated from Basilan.
"They had been using the fake MyKads for about two years while residing in Pandan Jaya, Kuala Lumpur.
"They used the forged documents to secure work and move around freely," he said, adding that the husband is 53 years old and the wife is 40.
He said both suspects had been detained to facilitate further investigations.
"They will be investigated under Rule 25(1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990, which carries a maximum penalty of three years' imprisonment, a RM20,000 fine, or both upon conviction."
