KUALA LUMPUR: Motorcyclists remained the biggest contributors to fatalities throughout Ops Selamat 12, which was held in conjunction with Chinese New Year 2018 from 9 to 23 February.
Deputy inspector-general of Police Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said this was evident when 150 motorcyclists were killed out of the 208 road fatalities reported during the period.
He said the second highest number involved car owners, with 46 fatalities, followed by pedestrians (13 deaths), lorries (five deaths), van users (five deaths), cyclists and buses (1 death) and other users five deaths.
Of the total number of cases, 82 cases were believed to have been caused by speeding, dozing off and using mobile phones.
"Other factors include failure to overtake another vehicle, tailgating, going against traffic flow, and recklessness while driving in and out of junctions," he said.
Noor Rashid was speaking at a press conference held after the Op Selamat 12 Best Contingent and District Award Ceremony here today.
Also present were PLUS Malaysia Berhad chairman Tan Sri Mohd Sheriff Mohd Kassim and its chief executive officer Datuk Azman Ismail.
