IPOH: A 71-year old man was charged in the Sessions Court here on Thursday with molesting and raping his two granddaughters last June.
The accused pleaded not guilty to both charges, which were read separately in Punjabi in front of Judge Datuk Julie Lack Abdullah.
For the first charge, he was accused of committing a sexual act on his six-year old granddaughter. The offence was committed in his house at Desa Chemor Permai here between 7pm to 7am from June 3 to 6.
He was charged under Section 376B of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail term of 30 years and whipping upon conviction.
As for the second charge, he was accused of sexually molesting his other granddaughter, who is five-years-old.
He was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and whipping upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Naidatul Athirah Azman prosecuted while the accused was represented by Sukhdev Singh.
Naidatul Athirah applied to the court to disallow bail for the accused in view that both victims were his grandchildren. Sukhdev then appealed for bail on medical grounds and said both victims were not living with him.
The judge then allowed bail to be set at RM10,000 for both charges with one surety. The judge also placed an additional condition, cautioning the accused to not have any contact with the victims in any manner.
The case is up for mention on August 13.
