SHAH ALAM: After spending almost a month in Sungai Buloh prison, Sungai Besar Umno chief Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos was finally allowed to post bail of RM20,000 in three sureties by the High Court here.
Judge Datuk Yazid Mustafa made the decision to allow Jamal’s application via his lawyer, Tan Sri Shafee Abdullah.
Jamal, 48, is facing three charges, one for escaping police custody and two for trespassing.
In handing down his decision to allow bail, Yazid said Jamal had filed a notice supported by affidavits, while the prosecution team, as the respondents in the case, had not filed any affidavit in response.
“Apart from that, the magistrate in the case did not have recourse to cancel the bail granted to the plaintiff (Jamal) even though there was no adequate response from him (as to why he had skipped bail),” he said.
Apart from Shafee, Jamal was also represented by Datuk Mohd Imran Tamrin, while deputy public prosecutors Mohd Fairus Johari and Fatin Hadni Khairuddin appeared as respondents.
On Monday, the Ampang magistrates court had rescinded Jamal’s bail order over two charges of trespassing on premises in Taman Kosas two year ago.
On July 5, Jamal claimed trial to a charge of escaping police custody the previous month. Jamal had been charged for creating a public nuisance whilst still warded in hospital for medical treatment, but left before the bail process could be completed.
He then fled to Indonesia through illegal channels and was arrested in Jakarta before being brought back here.
