MIRI: A burglar, frantic at being chased by villagers after breaking into a house, made a desperate call to the 999 emergency services to ask for help.
The man, in his 30s, had allegedly broken into a house at RPR Batu 6 in Pujut 7 around 3pm.
He ran off with a mobile phone belonging to the house owner.
However, he did not get off scot-free. The owner, upon realising the burglar’s presence, rounded up other residents and gave chase.
Miri Residents Committee spokesman, Malateh Mahmud, said the burglar, in his desperation, placed a call to the 999 emergency services to ask for help.
It is understood that he used the stolen mobile phone to place the emergency call.
“When the residents caught up with him, they found the stolen mobile phone on him,” he said.
Malateh said the man put up a fight and reacted aggressively when residents cornered him. He was eventually subdued and handed over to the police.
A police spokesman confirmed the incident and said further investigations are being carried out.
