Seven suspected cable thieves held after high-speed chase

KUALA LUMPUR: A group of suspected cable thieves led police on a high-speed chase in Manjalara, Kepong, last week.

Sentul police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahari said the incident occurred about 5.15am on Dec 4.

"Police on crime prevention patrols spotted a Ford Ranger and a Perodua Myvi in Jalan Lang Hitam and attempted to stop the vehicles.

"Both vehicles sped off and attempted to ram into the chasing police vehicles.

"Police fired a shot at one of the vehicles' tires in self defence," he told a press conference today.

He said after the incident, police launched a series of raids between Dec 4 and Dec 8 and arrested seven men between age 24 and 37.

"We seized 10 mobile phones, four vehicles, including a Volkswagen Golf, Ford Ranger and Perodua Myvi.

"The suspects have drug and criminal records," he said, adding that they tested positive for drugs.

He said police believe the suspects were involved in cable theft in the last three months.
