KUALA LUMPUR: Six main roads in the federal capital will be closed on Saturday due to the rally against the International Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).
City police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said the roads were Jalan Hishamuddin, Jalan Leboh Pasar, Jalan Tun Perak, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Raja Laut and Bulatan Dato’ Onn.
“The roads will be closed from 6am on Saturday. The rally participants will be allowed to gather from Jalan Raja, in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad building, until Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (near Sogo).
“Participants are also advised to park their vehicles outside the area where they will be gathered to avoid any traffic congestion,” he told a press conference at the city police headquarters.
Mazlan said, apart from these areas, police will also be controlling traffic from the Federal Territory mosque to Istana Negara’s Gate 3 as a memorandum is expected to be handed over to the palace.
“The memorandum will be handed over by a silat association and they will be gathering at the mosque between 10am and noon. Police estimate some 300 people will be gathered there for the handing over of the memorandum,” he said.
Mazlan advised rally participants that it would be better if they used public transportation to get to the area.
“If you should drive there, please do not park your vehicles along the roads. We will issues summonses and even tow your vehicles.
“Do not provoke anyone, gather peacefully, do not bring any weapons and above all, follow all the instructions of the police personnel on duty,” he said.
Mazlan said police would take action against any individual who provokes anyone else, causes problems, threatens public order or breaks any law.
“Members of the public are also asked to cooperate by not spreading any sort of speculation or rumour which could threaten public order. If there are any enquiries, the public can call the Dang Wangi police headquarters at 03-26002222 or the Brickfields police headquarters at 03-22979268,” he said.
