Adib inquest: Family believes he was assaulted, say lawyers

SHAH ALAM: The five-man legal team representing Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim’s family believes that the 24-year-old firefighter was assaulted during a riot at the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Subang Jaya on Nov 27.

Mohd Kamaruzaman A. Wahab, who is leading the legal team, said the assault may have led to Adib’s death.

“The inquest proceeding has started and it is aimed at finding what caused Adib’s death. We believe he was assaulted and that is what caused his death.

“(We will not know the details) until the witnesses are called and documents are presented to the coroner. We will assist in the inquest proceedings,” he told reporters at the Shah Alam Court here, today.

He added that none of Adib’s family members was present during the case management held before coroner Rofiah Mohamad today.

“Adib’s father, Mohd Kassim Abdul Hamid, is in Kedah and it is quite far for him to travel here,” said Kamaruzaman.

He added that they will be producing necessary documents for the coroner, such as Adib’s post-mortem result and his medical reports.

The 30 witnesses who will be called throughout the 52-day inquest will comprise Fire and Rescue Department personnel who had responded to an emergency call on the day of the incident, eye-witnesses at the scene, doctors, as well as the medical team which had treated Adib, he said.

Kamaruzaman added that Rofiah had set Feb 11 to 28 for the first stage of the inquest proceedings; and March 1, 4, 5, 19 to 29 and April 1 to 12 for the following stages.
