SUNGAI BULOH: Ku Adni Ku Azmi had just returned home from school when she received the devastating news that her brother had died in an accident near Universiti Teknologi Mara, Dungun.
Her eldest brother, Ku Adib Aizad, 20, a student at the university, was involved in a fatal motorcycle accident along with three friends.
Ku Adni, 14, recounted how the family learned of the tragedy when his friends knocked on their door to share the heartbreaking news.
"They told me he was in an accident. I was shocked and asked for confirmation. When they said he had passed away, I couldn't believe it. I asked, 'Sumpah lah?' (Are you serious?) and they said yes. I then told Opah (their grandmother Puziah Osman), and she clutched her chest and cried," she said when met at their home today.
As of now, their parents — Hafizah Iszahanid, an assistant news editor at Berita Harian, and Ku Azmi Saad, a staff member at Print Tower Sdn Bhd, part of the New Straits Times Press — are returning from Umrah after hearing the tragic news.
Ku Awfa, 12, Ku Adib's younger sister, said that she last saw her brother on Saturday when she dropped him back at campus after his semester break.
"My last words to him were to embarrass him. I shouted, 'Bye Abang!'" she recalled.
Puziah, 67, was at home caring for her grandchildren while their parents were away for umrah.
Ku Adib is expected to be laid to rest at Raudhatul A'liyah Saujana Utama Islamic Cemetery after their parents arrive.
As of now, his remains are en route to Masjid An-Nur Saujana Utama from Dungun, where family and friends will perform the funeral prayer.
