Penang couple remanded on suspicion of abusing badly-injured daughter

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police have obtained a week-long remand order, beginning today, against a couple suspected of abusing their 11-year-old daughter.

This came after police rescued the alleged victim from her home in the Ampang Jajar flats near here, yesterday.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said a urine test conducted on the suspects – the 38-year-old stepmother and 36-year-old father – came back positive for methamphetamine for the man.

“Our investigation also showed that the victim was the only child subjected to abuse from the total of nine children the couple have,” he added.

Nil Ros Azhan said the victim is currently at the paediatric ward of the Seberang Jaya Hospital, where an X-ray and CT scan is scheduled for today.

“A child specialist will also be present to check on the girl’s condition,” he added.

The girl’s plight came to light after Malaysian Tamilar Kural president David Marshel received a call from the victim’s neighbour at about 10am yesterday, alerting them to “an incident.”

After being rescued, the girl told police she had been beaten by her stepmother on the head with a helmet, causing both her eyes to swell.

There were also injuries to her forehead, hands and legs.

Doctors who attended to her told the New Straits Times that there were old injuries on the victim.
