Fisherman questioned for spreading fake news about Covid-19

KOTA BARU: A 64-year-old fisherman had his statement recorded by the police in connection with the dissemination of fake news on Covid-19 on social media recently.

Kelantan deputy police chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Abdullah Muhammad Piah said the man, however, was released later.

"Police opened an investigation paper after fake news circulated that a patient from a private hospital here had become the first coronavirus victim from Kelantan.

"The state health director had denied the news and following this, police hauled up the man for questioning," he told reporters after launching Kota Baru police's village adoption programme here today.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (Intelligence and Operations) deputy director Datuk Mohd Roze Shaari said the case in Tumpat was among 23 investigation papers opened by the police on the dissemination of fake news on Covid-19 so far.

He added thet so far three cases had been brought to court, one each in Kuala Lumpur, Terengganu and Sabah.
