KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) has started investigations into how former Umno Treasurer Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor had accumulated wealth of almost RM1 billion.
MACC chief commissioner Latheefa Koya said graftbusters had zoomed in on Tengku Adnan's case after his net worth was revealed in court during his ongoing corruption trial.
Tengku Adnan - who is popularly known as Ku Nan, had admitted that he had declared his wealth to the prime minister in 2001 total assets valued at RM938,643,566.17, and that he had made similar declarations in 2006 of assets worth RM711,325,822 and in 2013 at RM691,770,649 and finally RM782,748,061 in 2016.
The former Federal Territories minister said this when testifying in his corruption trial where he was accused of accepting RM2 million from businessman Tan Sri Chai Kin Kong.
Today, Tengku Adnan said RM2 million was just pocket change for him. The 69-year old Putrajaya member of parliament claimed he sold most of his companies worth hundreds of millions before becoming a full minister.
However, Latheefa said MACC viewed what had been revealed in court as a very serious matter and had therefore initiated an investigation.
On Tengku Adnan's testimony that he had revealed his wealth in his assets declarations to the various prime ministers, Latheefa said: "So he claims...our issue is not on the revelation of the assets but how he got the assets.
"Our investigations have already started." she said.
