Watch: Myvi driver in fatal JB accident intoxicated, lacked license

VIDEO MAY BE DISTRESSING TO SOME VIEWERS

JOHOR BARU: Police have arrested the driver of a Perodua Myvi involved in a three-vehicle collision which killed a navy personnel here, on Saturday.

The arrest of the 23-year-old woman followed her testing positive for methamphetamine.

A source told Berita Harian and Harian Metro that the woman also lacked a driver's licence, and that the vehicle's road tax had expired.

The 8.30am incident at Km4 of Jalan Johor Baru-Kota Tinggi instantly killed Mohd Rizal Buseri, 31, who held the Royal Malaysian Navy rank of 'Laskar Kanan'.

Two others suffered minor injuries in the accident, which also involved a Honda Accord and a Proton Iswara, reported Harian Metro.

"The Perodua Myvi's driver was detained (on Saturday) and a urine test on the driver came out positive for drug abuse.

"The case is being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," Johor Baru Selatan district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Padzli Mohd Zain said in a statement yesterday.

He said initial investigations revealed that the accident was likely due to the Myvi driver, who is believed to have lost control of the vehicle.

The vehicle skidded and hit a divider before crashing into two other vehicles at a crossroad traffic light near Plaza Pelangi.

"The impact of the crash caused the Honda Accord's driver to sustain severe head injuries, and he was confirmed to have died at the scene," Padzli added.

Meanwhile, Larkin Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Nordatul Badrul Abd Rahman said a fire truck with nine personnel was deployed to the scene shortly after a distress call was received.

He said the firefighters found that the Honda Accord, which was driven by Rizal, had turned turtle, and that he was pinned to the driver's seat.

"The victim was extricated using special equipment before we handed him over to the police," he said.

A 37-second video of the incident, which was recorded by a vehicle's dashcam, went viral on social media on Saturday. The footage shows the Perodua Myvi crashing into the Honda Accord near a traffic light junction.
