Maqis seizes 3,748 boxes of frozen buffalo meat from India

BUTTERWORTH: The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) seized 3,748 boxes of frozen buffalo meat from India at the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT), here.

One container was seized on Monday while the second one was seized the next day.

State Maqis director Noriah Dahlan said checks showed the consignments were labelled using inaccurate information as stated in the halal certificate declared.

"The consignments, weighing 55,994kg worth RM603,932.76, have been detained by Maqis for further action.

"The case will be investigated under Section 13 of the Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011 (Act 728).

"The offence carries a fine of not more than RM50,000 or a jail term not exceeding two years or both, upon conviction," she said.

According to Noriah, Maqis views seriously the issue of food safety, disease control and risk of pest entry, which can affect the country's agriculture industry.
