KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur FA (KLFA) congress-cum-elections have hit a roadblock as the association is now under investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The elections, set for Sept 7, were supposed to see the nominees announced today.
However, KLFA lodged a report with the MACC on Monday following allegations of election misconduct, prompting MACC officials to confiscate the nomination box for investigation.
It is understood that there are accusations of vote-buying among the candidates.
KLFA acting president Datuk Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid said the list of nominees will only be released after the MACC concludes its investigation.
"MACC will complete its investigation in 14 days, and only then can we open the sealed nomination box," said Abdullah Sani during a press conference at KLFA Stadium in Cheras today.
"If the MACC uncovers any wrongdoing, the KLFA executive committee will convene to decide on the next steps. We believe the congress can proceed as scheduled on Sept 7."
There is significant anticipation surrounding the KLFA elections, as Natural Resources and Environment Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil are reportedly set to contest the top position.
Abdullah Sani, who will not be contesting, added that the 28 clubs under KLFA are eligible to vote in the congress.
"Seven clubs are ineligible due to suspensions," said Abdullah Sani, who has been serving as acting KLFA president since the resignation of former Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad in March.
