Police arrest couple for selling ganja cookies, cakes

KUALA LUMPUR: A couple who were illegally selling ganja cookies and cakes via social media were arrested in separate raids in the Klang Valley on Tuesday.

City Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Sahar Abd Latif said police carried out surveillance on the suspects for a month before they executed the operation, codenamed "Op Storm", on Tuesday.

He said the first suspect, 34, was arrested at 3.50pm in Jalan Pudu with 53 cakes and 25 jars of cookies containing cannabis.

"The suspect then led investigators to another residency in PJ Midtown, in Jalan Kemajuan, where his 28-year-old girlfriend was picked up."

Sahar said police discovered another 131 jars of cookies believed to contain cannabis, 41 ganja cakes, eight slabs of cannabis weighing 7.8kg, 31l of liquid cannabis, ovens and other materials used for baking.

"Initial police investigations revealed that the two of them were lovers and they have been actively selling the cookies for RM100 and cakes for RM50 each, by marketing it to their close friends on Instagram.

"Checks showed they rented the unit in Petaling Jaya for RM3,000 eight months ago, but sold the cookies and cakes only for the past five months," he said.

Sahar said urine tests showed the man positive for cannabis, while the girlfriend's test result came back negative for drug abuse.

"Both have been remanded to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 (for trafficking)."

The man has been remanded for six days, while the woman is remanded for a week starting Sept 8.

Police also seized RM11,790 cash and a BMW X3 from the duo following both their arrests.

Sahar said all the items seized were estimated to be worth RM491,089.
