SHAH ALAM: The driver of a four-wheel-drive vehicle involved in a fatal traffic accident which killed two teenagers this morning was confirmed positive for drugs.
The accident took place after the four-wheel drive, which was being driven against traffic flow, slammed into the teenagers' car at KM8.5 of the Federal Highway near here, early this morning.
Shah Alam District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Baharudin Mat Taib said preliminary screening outcome on the 24-year-old driver's urine sample found the suspect positive for cannabis-type drugs.
"The suspect was taken by police from the scene (of the accident) to the Shah Alam District Police Headquarters (IPD) for further action.
"The Shah Alam Magistrate's Court has allowed remand on the suspect for six days starting today until Sept 17," he said in a statement today.
Baharudin said initial investigation found that the Mitsubishi Triton driven by the suspect against traffic flow was heading to Klang from Kuala Lumpur when it collided with the teenagers' Proton Wira which was going the opposite direction from Klang to Kuala Lumpur.
"Two victims who were killed, the driver, an 18-year-old female and the (front seat) 19-year-old male passenger were confirmed dead at the scene.
"Both remains were taken to the Shah Alam Hospital Forensic Department for autopsy," he said.
Baharuddin said they were still trying to ascertain and confirm the identity of the victims.
It was earlier reported that the two teen victims were identified as Nur Afiqah Abdul Karim, 18, and Muhammad Hafiz Syamir Dzul Asri, 19, from Klang and Port Klang, respectively.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Department Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
"Witnesses or members of the public with information on the incident are requested to assist in the investigation by contacting the Investigating Officer Inspector Muhammad Hasrul Bin Suhiami at 01131215697 of the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division from the Shah Alam District Police Headquarters," he said.
