Car manufacturing company official arrested for corruption

PUTRAJAYA: The general manager of a car manufacturing company was arrested for allegedly accepting hundreds of thousands in bribes from a used car company to buy below market price cars.

The used car company allegedly also failed to follow the proper procedures and requirements in the vehicle transactions.

The man was remanded for six days by magistrate Shah Wira Abdul Halim of the Putrajaya magistrate's court after Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) made the application this morning.

The court granted MACC six days remand order for the man until Sept 26.

A source said the illegal transactions that started way back in 2019 did not go through the approved sales process and estimated the losses to have reached millions of ringgit, involving about 1,000 units of cars.

It is learnt that the cars involved in the sales were pre-production cars which were reserved for use at the manufacturer's factory.

These pre-production cars were meant for testing and quality control checking before the actual production of the car model is sold in the market.

The source said the company had also been involved in trading in customer cars for the new model car from the car manufacturer.

The case is being investigated under Section 16 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Act 2009 for corruption.
