KUALA LUMPUR: A 25-year-old Iraqi man has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the murder of a Somali woman in front of a shop at Jalan Memanda 2, Ampang, yesterday.
Policemen from the Ampang Jaya district police headquarters Criminal Investigation Department detained the restaurant assistant at Jalan Ampang Putra at about 11.20pm last night.
Ampang Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Farouk Eshak said the suspect is a United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) cardholder.
"Apart from the arrest, police seized a knife believed to have been used in the incident. Initial investigation found that the suspect knew the 28-year-old victim.
"This morning, the Ampang Magistrate's court allowed for an application of a seven-day of remand order to enable police to conduct further investigation," Farouk said in a statement today.
He said with the arrest, police managed to solve the case within 24 hours after the incident.
"However, we call on the public, who witnessed or have any information related to the incident to come forward and assist with ongoing police investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder."
Berita Harian had reported that the police received a report of a Somali woman found dead, believed to have been killed at a car park in front of a shop at Jalan Memanda 2, Ampang, at about 12.12pm yesterday.
Initial police investigations revealed that witnesses at the scene had allegedly seen the woman arguing with a man, before she was stabbed with a sharp object.
