Suspect who robbed, torched grocery store in Raub nabbed

RAUB: Police have arrested a jobless man some 48 hours after he robbed a grocery store which left a foreigner injured and set the premises on fire at Felda Tersang 1 near here on July 23.

The 50-year-old suspect was arrested in a plantation at Felda Sungai Koyan, Kuala Lipis, about 7.15pm yesterday.

Raub police chief Superintendent Kama Azural Mohamed said when policemen found the suspect in the plantation, he had acted aggressively to avoid arrest.

"Police managed to overpower the suspect and we recovered RM1,420 cash, three gold bracelets and cigarette lighters from him. Investigations revealed the suspect is a drug addict with 10 previous records for drug offences and four criminal offences.

"The suspect, who lives in the area, admitted he was responsible for robbing, injuring a victim and setting the premises on fire, and he was acting alone. The man has been remanded till July 28 for further investigations," he said in a statement today.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for committing robbery resulting in injury and Section 435 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by fire.

In the 4am incident on Saturday, an Indonesian woman, who was a helper at the grocery shop, sustained injuries to the head and face after she was attacked by a masked man.

Kama Azural said the incident occurred between 1am and 2am when the man entered the premises before he attacked the woman using a piece of metal.

"The man stole RM1,700 from the counter and two gold bracelets belonging to the victim. He tied the victim before leaving and she saw the suspect setting the premises on fire," he said, adding the victim managed to seek help from neighbours and flee the burning premises.
