GEORGE TOWN: A man and his girlfriend, both from Myanmar, died in what police believe was a murder-suicide at an apartment complex in Jalan Sungai here this evening.
The woman, who works at a gold factory, has been identified as Khin Nyein, 30.
It is learnt that the man, in his 30s, had stabbed the woman before leaping to his death from the eighth floor of the apartment complex in the 8pm incident.
Deputy Northeast police chief Superintendent V. Saravanan said, according to a witness who was with the female victim, they had just returned from work.
"When they arrived on the eighth floor of the apartment, the male suspect suddenly hugged the deceased from the back and closed her mouth.
"He then stabbed her in the stomach several times with a knife," he said when contacted by the New Straits Times here tonight.
Saravanan said the witness tried to save her friend but was pushed by the suspect.
"The suspect then leapt to his death. His body was found on the ground floor parking bay," he added, noting the victim and suspect were not staying together.
Saravanan said further investigations were being carried out to ascertain the motive behind the incident.
