Explosive device that killed man in Pandan was a 'homemade bomb'

KUALA LUMPUR: Police believe the explosive device that killed a a 28-year-old cook outside a restaurant in Pandan Indah was a homemade bomb.

Police arrived at the conclusion after having discovered certain items and materials at the scene which had originated from the bomb that exploded.

Among the materials found were batteries, power banks, and fragments of paper cutters.

Ampang Jaya District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Farouk Eshak said police have not ruled out the possibility that other materials were also used to assemble the bomb but those items may have been destroyed during the blast.

He declined to elaborate on the details of the explosive used in the incident, saying they were awaiting the full forensic report.

Farouk said while it remains unclear if the maker of the bomb was an expert, he admitted that it was not difficult to learn it online.

"The Ampang Jaya District Criminal Investigation Department is still investigating the suspects as well as the motive.

"We are obtaining information from the public, eyewitnesses as well as closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) footage," he said.
