TAWAU: An unemployed man was arrested with more than two kilograms of drugs estimated to be worth RM130,000 in a raid in Bandar Sri Indah, near here.
The arrest on Tuesday was carried out following information and intelligence from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (JSJN) of the Kota Kinabalu Contingent Headquarters (IPK) in collaboration with the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (BSJN) of the Tawau District Police Headquarters (IPD).
District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin said, the 53-year-old local male suspect was arrested while he was in a four-wheel drive vehicle at about 6pm.
He said, following inspection in the vehicle, two transparent plastic packets containing the drug syabu weighing 2076.66 grams were found.
"Police believe that the drugs are to be distributed and sold in the local market here.
"However, further investigations are still being carried out, including identifying the source of the drugs obtained, as well as tracking accomplices or drug trafficking syndicates who are suspected to be involved," he said at a press conference here.
Jasmin said that the suspect, found to be positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine in addition to having eight previous records of drug-related and criminal offences, had been remanded for seven days until January 31.
"The case is being investigated in accordance with Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act (ADB) 1952, which provides for the mandatory death penalty if convicted," he said.
