Housewife baited with RM90 commission before losing over RM50,000 to online job scammer

KUANTAN: All it took was a few clicks to like and subscribe videos on YouTube, and a 41-year-old housewife earned RM90 commission from her first online task.

Little did the victim from Kuantan realise, the commission was bait that landed her in a job scam mess, which saw her losing RM53,875 of her savings and cash borrowed from other family members last month.

Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said the victim received a part-time job offer through WhatsApp on Jan 29.

"She was required to click the like and subscribe buttons for YouTube videos, and was promised 30 per cent commission after successfully completing the given task. She transferred RM300 and completed the given tasks before RM390 was deposited into her bank account.

"Assuming the part time job was genuine, the victim used her savings and borrowed cash from family members to earn more commission. She made 10 transactions amounting RM53,875 into four bank accounts," he said in a statement.

Ramli said the victim did not receive a single sen from the part time job and lost all the cash which she had paid.

He reminded members of the public not to be easily influenced by part time jobs offered on social media and to take a minute to verify any account number via https://ccid.rmp.gov.my/semakmule before making any transactions.

Ramli said the case was investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which provides for a maximum jail term of 10 years and whipping, and a fine if convicted.
