PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today confirmed that former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has been arrested.
The graft busters in a statement said the Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) president was arrested at the MACC headquarters at 1pm today when he was summoned to record statements over the Jana Wibawa scandal and other related issues.
The MACC also said it had been granted approval from the Attorney General Chambers to prosecute Muhyiddin, who is also the Pagoh member of parliament, at the Kuala Lumpur Court near here tomorrow (Friday).
"Muhyiddin who is also Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) president is expected to face several charges under Section 23 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 and Section 4(1)b of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001," the statement said.
It was reported that Muhyiddin was accompanied by his lawyer Datuk K Kumaraendran when he arrived at the MACC headquarters at 11.15am today.
The Jana Wibawa scheme was introduced by the government under Muhyiddin's administration to speed up project implementation and boost the country's economy during and after the Covid-19 pandemic.
The scheme was also intended to increase the capacity of Bumiputera/Malay contractors in the construction industry to be more competitive, resilient and potential.
