KUALA LUMPUR: Police have extended the remand of a man who had beaten up workers of the popular Pelita nasi kandar restaurant in Cyberjaya last week.
Sepang police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Kamarul Azran Wan Yusof said a two day extension of the remand order until Tuesday had been obtained against the 50-year old man, who was arrested on Thursday.
He said police were in the final stages of wrapping up their investigation into the case
It was reported that two of the restaurant workers were injured after they were beaten up by three customers who were believed to be drunk.
Following the incident, one of the victims sustained bruising and injuries to his neck, head, left shoulder and ear as a result of being repeatedly hit by the main suspect,.
Another worker who tried to stop the assault also suffered injuries.
The restaurant workers were also threatened by the two other suspects.
The incident allegedly happened after one of the man was ticked off for using his fingers to take food on display at the counter.
A video of the assault went viral after the incident, sparking nationwide outrage against the drunk trio.
In the video, two men were seen assaulting a worker in the restaurant premises, damaging furniture, appliances and cutlery.
Police managed to arrest all three suspects at two separate locations soon after the incident.
The case has been classified under sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Penal Code.
Wan Kamarul Azran said that the complainant, who is the manager of the restaurant, claimed that the establishment suffered losses because of the damage caused by assault, including food being spoilt and having to be thrown away.
He said initial investigations revealed that two of the suspects, who work as a tour guide and a taxi driver, have criminal records for crime and drug-related offences.
