Police probing viral footage of woman being beaten up by multiple individuals

GEORGE TOWN: Police are probing a viral incident involving a girl who was beaten up by several individuals on a staircase.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong said the video footage was uploaded by a Facebook account using the handle 'Whyman Whyman'.

He said about 10pm on Sunday police received a report from a 51-year-old man.

"The man claimed that the woman who was beaten up in the viral video was his daughter," he said.

Elaborating, Soffian said the 24-year-old victim had left home in December last year due to family problems.

"Since then, the victim had not returned home and was out of reach from her family.

"Until now, we are not able to determine the location where the incident happened," he said.

The case is probed under Section 147 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

"We advise people to stop spreading the video footage to avoid any speculations.

"Those with information should come forward to assist in the investigation," he added.
