KUALA LUMPUR: A foreign man, observed igniting fireworks from a moving car on Jalan 2/3A Pusat Bandar Utara in a viral video, has been arrested.
The 31-year-old suspect was apprehended around 12am at his employer's shop near the incident's location.
The police also seized a Proton Waja car used by the suspect during the incident.
Sentul District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahari stated that the arrest was made after the police identified a video of the incident that became viral around 8:30pm yesterday.
According to him, the police investigation revealed that the incident likely occurred on the same day as the posted viral video clearly indicates the suspect engaging in dangerous behaviour.
"The suspect, employed at a vegetable shop, was found to be using his employer's car to commit the act. It is also revealed that the suspect did not possess a valid driving license.
"Subsequent investigations found that the suspect has no prior criminal records, and he is currently remanded for four days at the Sentul District Police Headquarters (IPD)," he said.
He added that the case is being investigated under Section 7 of the Explosives Act 1957, with the offences for causing explosions with the intent to endanger life or property.
This offence carries a penalty of seven years in prison or, a fine of RM10,000, or both.
Ahmad Sukarno has called on the public to step forward and aid the police investigation by providing any information related to the incident.
