GEORGE TOWN: A senior citizen died after he was stabbed at least 27 times all over his body at the parking lot of his apartment in Jalan Perak here today.
Acting Northeast district police chief Superintendent V. Saravanan said they were alerted to the incident at about 6.18pm by a resident there.
He said the victim, in his 60s, was sent to the Penang Hospital in an ambulance but died while at the hospital.
"Based on the initial investigation, the suspects are believed to be two men on a motorcycle who had entered into the apartment's parking lot before one of them stabbed the victim repeatedly.
"Initial checks on the body found 27 stab wounds and the suspect is believed to have been attacked using a knife," he said tonight.
Saravanan said during the attack, the other suspect was just on the motorcycle, awaiting to flee if police arrived.
He said police had obtained the closed circuit television (CCTV) recording at the scene as well as the guard post.
He said efforts to track down the suspects are currently underway.
"The cause of the incident is still being probed but we believe it had nothing to do with robbery as the victim's belongings are still intact. The victim is an economy rice seller at the Jalan Perak market.
"In fact, based on the CCTV footage, the suspects' action is seen as wanting to kill the senior citizen," he added.
The case is probed under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
