KUALA LUMPUR: A man believed to be having an illicit affair with a married woman is fighting for his life at the hospital after he was assaulted by a group of people on Tuesday.
Ampang Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail said the victim, in his 20s, is being treated at the Selayang Hospital and that his condition is critical after sustaining severe injuries during the attack.
The extramarital affair turned ugly for the man after one of his assailants, who is also the husband of the woman, learned about an alleged attempt by the victim to run away with his lover.
Mohd Azam said preliminary investigation showed the attack took place at a restaurant in Ampang at 10.15am.
"An individual suddenly came towards the victim and started hitting him until his nose bled.
The victim was later taken to another location where he was beaten by a group of more than three people before he felt unconscious.
"The victim is still being treated at the hospital and his condition is critical," said Mohd Azam in a statement today.
Police, he said, arrested five people including the woman and her husband, aged between 22 and 32, to facilitate investigation into the case.
He said police believed that the motive behind the attack was because one of the suspects was angry after learning that the victim was planning to run away with his wife.
"Checks also showed that one of the suspects, in his 20s, has nine criminal records, including one wanted by the police.
"All suspects have been remanded for seven days starting today to facilitate investigation into the case under Section 326 of the Penal Code," he said.
