Police bust fake cop wearing 'police' vest in Ampang

KUALA LUMPUR: A construction worker was arrested yesterday for impersonating a police officer by wearing a vest with 'police' written on it at Jalan Pandan Cahaya 2/3 Pandan Cahaya, Ampang, near here.

The 27-year-old suspect, riding a motorcycle, was apprehended during the New Year's Eve crime prevention operation around 1.45am.

Ampang Jaya District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail said while in custody, the suspect failed to show a police authorisation card and could not provide a reasonable explanation for wearing the vest.

"The suspect was arrested for allegedly impersonating a public servant as a police officer, and we also seized the vest, motorcycle with keys, and an identification card.

"The urine test on the suspect for drugs came back negative, and the background check found no previous criminal records," he said in a statement today.

He added that the construction worker is remanded for four days until Jan 4 for further investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 170 of the Penal Code for impersonating a public servant and Section 89 of the Police Act 1967 for unlawfully possessing equipment supplied to a police officer.
