TEMERLOH: A man, 42, with a criminal record has been detained to facilitate investigations into a fight at the site of a fatal accident at Km127 of Jalan Kuala Lumpur-Kuantan near here yesterday.
The suspect had allegedly attacked a traffic policeman, who had gone to help at the accident scene, and a passing Proton Saga driver, who is believed to have recorded a video of the shoving incident involving the victim's family members and policeman on his handphone at 5.53pm.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mazlan Hassan said police had detained one suspect today in their probe into the assaults and were identifying others.
"The suspect is being investigated for using force against a policeman and attacking another person at the scene.
"The man has records for gang robbery, theft and was also detained under the Prevention of Crime Act 1959."
Mazlan said police were studying videos of the fight as there were many people involved in it.
"Some people were seen trying to stop the attack on the policeman, so we need to conduct a thorough check to determine the culprits."
Yesterday, a 20-year-old motorcyclist, a scrap metal worker, died after crashing his machine into a Perodua Myvi.
The Myvi driver, 75, had allegedly made an illegal turn (U-turn) on the double line when the motorcyclist hit his car.
Several people, believed to be family members and friends of the motorcyclist, attacked the Myvi driver; the Proton Saga driver, 42, for recording the incident; and a policeman, 37, who was assisting at the scene.
The Myvi and Proton Saga drivers sustained injuries and their car windows were smashed, while the policeman was not injured.
