Safawi, Akhyar join Terengganu on loan from JDT

KUALA LUMPUR: Welcome home, Safawi Rasid.

The midfielder has joined his home state, Terengganu, on a year-long loan from Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) for the new M-League season, which starts in May.

Joining Safawi is Kedah-born Akhyar Rashid, also on loan from JDT.

Fondly known as Pawi, the dead ball specialist will add depth to Tomislav Steinbruckner's attacking line, which was missing last season.

For the record, Safawi and Akhyar were part of national coach Kim Pan Gon's Asian Cup squad.

In a statement released by the club, Safawi, 27, will don the no. 11 jersey.

"Safawi is proud to be back in service for his hometown, and he knows he must work hard to gain a spot in the first eleven.

"He is eager to use his experience to help Terengganu hunt for a trophy."

Meanwhile, Akhyar will replace Sony Norde on the flanks.

"Akhyar will wear the no. 33 jersey. He believes Terengganu are strong enough to be a contender in the new season."

Last season, Terengganu finished sixth in the Super League and were semi-finallists in the FA Cup.

The Turtles also performed decently in the AFC Cup, finishing second in their group. However, it was not enough to advance to the knockout stage.
