KOTA KINABALU: Police have arrested a teenage boy after a picture showing him holding a firearm in the window of a condominium unit in Jalan Kayu Madang here went viral.
The 15-year-old was arrested by a district police team at his home yesterday at 5.36pm.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said they received information from the public about a viral picture in a WhatsApp group, showing a teenager holding a weapon-like device.
He said, as a result, a police team conducting an inspection found an imitation firearm resembling an AK47 assault rifle and an imitation pistol.
"Upon questioning, the suspect admitted to committing the act at 9am last Saturday on the stairs of the condominium, using the said firearm to shoot at several objects used as targets.
"The suspect also confessed to purchasing two imitation firearms at a shop in the city for RM158 and RM54," he said when contacted today.
Zaidi said, acting on the information, the police team conducted a raid at the shop selling the imitation firearms in a shopping complex here.
"A number of firearms were seized, and a 15-year-old boy and a 19-year-old woman working at the premises were arrested.
"The duo and the seizures were brought to the district police headquarters for further investigation," he said.
He added that the case was being investigated under Section 36 of the Firearms Act 1960.
