KUALA LUMPUR: Two men were killed in a shootout with police at the Tanjung Malim rest area of the North-South Expressway last night.
Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said Hulu Selangor operations room received a report on a shooting incident at 11.32pm yesterday.
He said federal Criminal Investigation Department policemen, assisted by their Perak counterparts, had earlier tailed a grey-coloured Proton Waja with occupants who were acting suspiciously.
"When the suspects realised they were being tailed, they tried to escape by entering the NSE, heading northwards.
"The police team chased the suspects until they entered the Tanjung Malaim rest area where they managed to stop the suspects' car," he said in a statement.
At that point, said Hussein, the suspect fire several shots towards police.
"The police team returned fire until the situation was deemed safe. Checks showed both the suspects in the vehicle were dead.
"The suspects were two local men, one of whom had a criminal record with 23 entries. He was also wanted for another six crimes. The identity of the other person has yet to be established," he said.
Hussein said the case was being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder and Section 8 of the Arms Act 1960 for possession of a firearm and ammunition without licence.
