KOTA BARU: The Sessions Court here has set Oct 24 for remention in the case of a former inmate charged with possessing Islamic State (IS) materials and supporting the terrorist group.
Judge Zulkifli Abdullah said the date was to allow for an expert report on the analysis of the IS-related materials that have yet to be obtained.
The accused, Nik Mohd Shalahuddin Zakaria, 40, nodded after the charges were read to him.
According to the first and second charges, the man is accused of possessing 1,020 images, 26 videos, and 321 articles in portable document format (PDF) on a Samsung Galaxy J7 Pro mobile phone, as well as 378 images, 36 videos, and 244 articles in PDF format on an Oppo A16K mobile phone.
These materials were alleged to be related to IS and terrorist activities.
He allegedly committed the offences in Kampung Senang, Kota Jembal, at 9.15am on June 10, 2024.
Shalahuddin is being charged under Section 130JB (1)(a) of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to seven years in prison or a fine, and the confiscation of any property, if convicted.
For the third charge, the accused is alleged to have supported IS by using a Facebook account under the name Ahmad Saif Al-Islam Il at the Bukit Aman police headquarters, Kuala Lumpur, at 10.15pm on June 10, 2024.
For the fourth charge, the accused allegedly pledged allegiance to IS by performing a bai'ah (pledge of loyalty) ceremony with Abu Hafs Al Hashimi Al-Qurashi, an IS leader, as the caliph to support the group.
This act allegedly took place in Kampung Senang, Kota Jembal, on June 10, 2024.
Both charges are filed under Section 130J (1)(a) of the Penal Code.
The prosecution was represented by deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Faiz Fitri Mohamad, and the accused was unrepresented.
