Babysitter arrested over suspected abuse of two-month-old baby girl

JOHOR BARU: Police have arrested a babysitter in Bandar Dato' Onn on suspicion of abusing a two-month-old baby girl, causing the infant fracture one of her thighs.

The 36-year-old woman was arrested following a police report lodged by the infant's parents last Sunday.

Johor Baru Selatan district police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the suspect will be remanded until July 28 to facilitate investigation into the case.

"The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 (for ill-treatment, neglect, abandonment, or exposure of children)," he said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, a woman believed to be the mother of the victim took to social media yesterday to express her disappointment about what had happened to her daughter.

The woman, identified as Fione May on her Facebook account, said she and her husband started to notice something was wrong with their daughter after picking her up from the babysitter's house on Saturday.

She claimed that her baby kept crying, especially when they changed her diaper.

Suspecting something was amiss, she confronted the babysitter about the change in her daughter's behavior.

"The babysitter said she did not notice any difference. The next day, my husband and I took the baby to the clinic.

"We were told by the doctor to take our daughter to the hospital's emergency ward. We were shocked when the X-ray scan showed that our daughter's thigh was fractured," she said.

Unhappy with what had happened to the infant, the woman said she and her husband decided to lodge a report about the incident.
