Remand extended for babysitter arrested in 2-month-old baby abuse case

JOHOR BARU: The remand for a babysitter arrested in connection with a case involving a 2-month-old baby girl with a broken leg suspected to be due to abuse has been extended by three more days.

Johor Baru Selatan police chief, Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the remand order against the 36-year-old female suspect will begin tomorrow and last until Wednesday.

He said the suspect had previously been remanded for six days to assist in investigations under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.

"We have obtained court permission to extend the remand period for three days starting tomorrow until Wednesday," he said briefly when contacted today.

Earlier, it was reported that the police arrested the caregiver in Bandar Dato' Onn here after the baby's parents filed a police report last Sunday.

The baby's mother expressed her disappointment on social media after she and her husband noticed something was wrong with their child after picking her up from the caregiver's home a day before the police report was made.

The baby was reportedly constantly crying, especially during diaper changes, and refused to drink milk.

The couple took their child to the hospital and were informed that the baby's thigh was broken after an X-ray scan.

The baby's mother then called the caregiver to inquire about the injury, but she denied any wrongdoing before they made the police report.
