KOTA KINABALU: The mystery of a foul smell emanating from a rented room on the second floor of a premises on Jalan Lorong Haji Yacoob, Kampung Air, was resolved when the body of a man was discovered last night.
The body of the man, believed to be in his 30s, was found bloated and emitting a strong odour on a mattress in his rented room, around 9 p.m.
It is understood that other tenants in the building became suspicious of the foul smell and the liquid seeping from the room in the afternoon.
The tenants reported the issue to the building manager, who then opened the room door and found the man's body lying on the mattress.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Kasim Muda, said the investigation revealed that the victim was an employee at a restaurant located on the ground floor of the building.
He said there were no signs of criminal elements associated with the man's death.
"The body has been sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital I (HQEI) and an autopsy will be conducted today to determine the cause of death.
"The case is classified as sudden death (SDR)," he said.
