Elite traffic squad members nab 9 motorcyclists for reckless riding, 'Superman' stunts

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The elite police Squad 42 traffic enforcement team arrested nine motorcyclists for illegal racing and performing dangerous stunts on Jalan Lebuh Ismail Sultan and the Second Link Highway, yesterday.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner M. Kumarasan said the nine, including a pillion rider, aged between 17 and 28, were detained during an operation against illegal street racing.

He said the motorcyclists had performed dangerous stunts, including the "Superman" pose where they extend both legs backward.

"They performed these dangerous stunts while competing with each other in hazardous zig-zag manoeuvres that endangered themselves and other road users," he said in a statement.

Squad 42, an elite team of traffic policemen, was established to combat illegal street racing activities.

They are empowered to issue summonses and arrest motorcyclists at any location, not just during operations.

By utilising the Mobile Compound Payment System (MCOPS) devices, they can also check for traffic violations and take necessary action against the offenders.

Kumarasan said Squad 42 was deployed to the highway to conduct surveillance in response to numerous public complaints about illegal street racing in the vicinity.

The cases are being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.

If found guilty, they could face up to five years in prison, fines ranging from RM5,000 to RM20,000, and a two-year suspension of their driving licenses.
