IPOH: An elderly woman was killed when the motorcycle she was riding crashed after she swerved to avoid a stray dog crossing the road at the Silibin 1 Business Centre here.
Rohani Nek, 69, was killed on the spot in the 7.15am incident on Monday.
She suffered head injuries in the incident.
Rohani was believed to have just dropped off her 11-year-old grandson at SK Silibin when the crash occurred.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said investigations revealed that the victim was riding alone from Taman Silibin heading towards Jalan Jelapang.
"When she reached the location, it is believed she lost control, veered off to the left of the road, and fell.
"The victim's body was then sent to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital for post-mortem examination," he said in a statement.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Abang Zainal Abidin urged witnesses to contact investigating officer Inspector Edwin Tang Chiew Song at 016-5506863 to assist investigations.
Meanwhile, the victim's granddaughter, Nur Farah Allysha Shaizul Nizam, 18, said her grandmother dropped off her younger sibling at school daily by motorcycle, and the route she took was known to have many stray dogs.
Nur Farah Allysha claimed that during the incident, about five dogs chased her grandmother's motorcycle while she was taking her sibling to school.
"I never expected my grandmother would be involved in an accident while trying to avoid stray dogs crossing the road," she said when met at their home in Jalan Budiman, Kampung Tengku Hussin Baru, Manjoi here.
Nur Farah Allysha said that grandmother often expressed fear of being chased by stray dogs but had no choice since it was the main route used by road users.
Meanwhile, the victim's son, Shazrin Mohd Mokhtar, 48, has urged the local authorities to learn from the incident involving his mother.
Shazrin said closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage showed a stray dog crossing the road when his mother passed through the area.
"I am concerned that if this issue is not addressed promptly, there could be similar unwanted incidents affecting others using that area," he said.
